Hello Dr.Schames.First I would like to say thank you for the help you provide to people.I found your site while researching displacement of TMJ.After being given the run-around by so many doctors I realized no one can help me better than I can help myself.
My situation started about 2 months after I had a lower molar pulled,it had been filled a few years back and was suppose to receive a crown but never did.It eventually broke and the large filling fell out.I lived with it a few years and it bothered me off and on.I decided it was time to have it checked and the dentist at my local clinic said it has to be removed,so he pulled it.No problems with the extraction, everything went well.2 months later I start to have this weird feeling on my right side which is the side the pulled tooth had been on.I go back to the dental clinic and they do a small x-ray and say it looks fine but give me a script for an antibiotic.I take the antibiotic but still have the feeling.I go back and they tell me its nothing and to let it pass.Well a funny thing that happened, the antibiotic they gave me caused me to get Thrush(which they failed to tell me I had while going in and having my mouth looked at by 4 dentists at once!).I end up going to my primary doctor and he says I have Thrush. After seeing him I notice my feeling is worse and it feels like my right side is in spasm.I had already left the clinic when this started happening so I do the first thing that comes to my mind,GOOGLE the symptoms.First thing that pops up is TMJD and I suddenly realized this is what I have.I return to the dental clinic the next day and they say " oh you are right but there isn't anything we can do",so they refer me to the Oral Surgery clinic across the hall.so a few days later i go to the OS clinic and some resident there tells me this is "tmj problems" and i should have the wisdom teeth pulled on that side as they can have effects on the TMJ.I said OK.The extraction was booked for about 10 days later and in those 10 days I felt ok.I was taking some muscle relaxants I had gotten out of sympathy from my primary care doctor. The wisdom teeth extraction was horrible. The surgeon did not seem to know what he was doing and took extra long in pulling my lower wisdom tooth. My recovery was horrible and painful and after returning to the surgeon a few times he basically tells me " there is nothing I can do for you".So I book an appointment with a TMJ specialist in my area (Northeast Ohio). He does a tomograph x-ray and says I have a slight displacement on my right side.He says he can either inject me with something to relax the muscle and manipulate the joint in place himself or I can do exercises for 2 weeks that could get it back in place.I opt for the exercises and I did do them.Upon my return to him I felt ok and had an opening of 47mm which he says is normal. He shakes my hand and says "you are cured".Great right?Well 2 weeks later I start to get a weird feeling in my other joint which has happened before through this whole ordeal.I return and he tells me this is because I clench my teeth which I do.He recommends a split that costs $550 which will keep me from clenching and allow me jaw to relax.I have the splint and have been wearing it for about a month and a half but my jaw still feels displace and my teeth do not feel normal on my right side.I will include pictures of the splint. What should I do doctor?I am at my wits end here.I am so confused and I am really scared about trusting anyone.I feel no one truly cares about my situation except myself.I am very grateful you offer your expert advice to people like myself.I should also mention that I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea after this whole ordeal which only adds to my problems.
This is the "repositioning splint",its fitted on a bottom retainer because my TMJ doctor says my lower teeth can shift because I am missing a molar on each lower side.
Any help or advice would be very appreciated doctor.I can go into more detail and provide more pics as well.Thank you for your time and help.
